    With only a pick-up truck, Texas-native Myer “Mike” Silverstein began to collect and sell scrap metal. While cruising through Webster City on the hunt for metal, he saw his opportunity. He bought some land and setup shop, Webster City Iron & Metal Co.

    Through the years, Mike acquires additional property. In 1951, he relocates the business to what is now Scrap Processors, Inc. (SPI), at 505 Seneca Street in Webster City, Iowa.

    Mike’s sons, Ben and Kenny, join the team. Together they expand the company to include not just scrap yards, but auto parts and convenience stores, too — all located in Central Iowa.

    SPI celebrates 30 years of serving Central Iowa’s scrap metal recycling needs.

    In the wake of both Mike and Kenny’s retirements, Ben shifts SPI’s focus back to scrap-metal processing and recycling.

    Ben retires and his son, David, begins expanding SPI’s services with modern and eco-friendly options, such as demanufacturing and recycling cars and appliances.

    After just three years, David grows the business to include a third location devoted to recycling appliances.

    In 2014, David’s niece, Jessica Robbins, joined SPI as Executive Vice President. Kyle Brudos later joined as Assistant Manager and now serves as Des Moines Manager.

    Ninety percent of our staff has been with us for 10 years plus.

    David’s sons enter the family business by helping out when they are not in school.

    Together, with the loyal, hardworking SPI staff, David continues to explore new, innovative and sustainable ways to serve the communities that have supported SPI for over 75 years.

    After 38 years with SPI, Des Moines Manager Steve Speck retired in 2025. Following 10 years of service, Kyle Brudos was promoted to Des Moines Manager, continuing SPI’s commitment to experienced leadership, operational consistency, and long-term growth.
